The Log

Methods and Form in Architecture I, Yale College, Fall 2019

In my initial explorations of the log through photography and drawing, I thought about how to retain as much of the log’s natural integrity as I would eventually have to create a resting place inspired by it. The unnatural cube cut showcases the log’s internal and external textures while excavating a space that a human could occupy, both interrupting the natural lines of the bark and exposing more of the log’s internal natural lines.

In essence, the log is beautiful in its natural state, but there is also an entire world within the log that is revealed through human interaction. These paradoxes and polarities highlight eachother’s beauty, in turn becoming complimentary.
